1. Does Japan allow individuals to import prescription medicines by mail?
Yes. Japan allows individuals to mail in up to a 1-month supply of prescription medicines from overseas for personal use without a permit. If the quantity exceeds this amount, you must apply in advance for an import certificate (Yakkan Shoumei). For detailed rules, please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s guidelines on bringing medicines for personal use into Japan (link).
2. Do I need to submit an application to the government in advance to import medicines for personal use?
A 1-month supply of prescription medicines does not require prior application. However, customs may randomly inspect your parcel and ask you to provide a copy of the prescription to prove the medicines are for personal treatment. For quantities exceeding a 1-month supply, you must apply in advance. Please follow the free online application procedure described on the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website.
3. How much customs duty is charged on medicines imported for personal use?
Japan Customs applies a zero-tariff policy to imported medicines. As long as the products are in a reasonable quantity for personal use, customs duty is generally not levied at the time of import.
