1. Does the UAE allow individuals to import prescription medicines by mail?

Yes. The UAE allows individuals to import non-controlled medicines (i.e., medicines other than narcotics and psychotropic substances) by mail for personal use. The GLP-1 medicines you purchase from the Mediva Rx website are not classified as controlled medicines, so you may purchase and import them yourself with peace of mind.

A reasonable personal-use quantity is up to a 3-month supply. It is recommended to stay within this amount per shipment to avoid being mistaken for commercial importation.

2. Do I need to apply in advance to the UAE government to import medicines for personal use?

No. MOHAP only requires prior approval for narcotic and psychotropic/controlled medicines. Non-controlled prescription medicines (including GLP-1 products) do not require prior approval.

3. What should I do if customs asks me to submit an Import Permit?

Sometimes customs may request an Import Permit even for non-controlled prescription medicines.
You can handle it as follows:

Step 1: Immediately submit an application on the official MOHAP website

Step 2: Upload the following documents

  • Doctor’s prescription (issued within the last 3 months)

  • Medical report (explaining the condition and the medical necessity of the treatment)

  • Copy of passport or Emirates ID

  • Product information (if requested by customs, you may obtain a brief ingredient and packaging description from the manufacturer)

Step 3: Obtain approval (1–3 business days)

Step 4: Forward the approval letter to DHL / customs for clearance

Once this is completed, the parcel can be released normally.

4. How much duty is charged on medicines personally imported into the UAE?

No customs duty is charged. Medicines are treated as duty-free goods, and for small personal-use shipments they are generally not subject to customs duty or VAT.

GLP-1 Weight Management

GLP-1 medicines are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and weight management.
The leading options are tirzepatide (Eli Lilly) and semaglutide (Novo Nordisk).
Mediva Rx provides equally effective, more affordable generic versions.
